Trusted Treatment

Metal braces have been straightening smiles for decades. And honestly? They've come a long way. Today's metal braces are smaller, smoother, and a lot more comfortable than what most parents remember from their own childhood. If you or your child needs braces in South Surrey, you're in the right place.

At Dream Orthodontics, Dr. Amani Morra, Certified Specialist in Orthodontics, has been treating patients with metal braces since 2008. Whether you're a parent in Morgan Crossing looking into options for your 10-year-old, or an adult in Ocean Park ready to finally tackle that crowded smile, we'll walk you through everything and make sure the plan fits your life.

What Are Braces & What Are They Made Of?

Metal braces use a system of brackets, archwires, and small elastic ties to slowly guide your teeth into the right position. The brackets are bonded directly to the front of each tooth. A thin archwire runs through all the brackets and creates the steady, gentle pressure that moves your teeth over time.

Here's what braces are made of and what makes today's metal braces different from older versions:

Durable Wires

This thin piece of metal runs from one bracket to another. Dr. Morra will change the shape and curvature of the wire to move your teeth in the right direction.

The wire will attach all of your bottom or upper teeth together in many cases, but we might occasionally cut the wire if connecting just a few teeth is better for your treatment plan.

Smaller, Lighter Brackets

Brackets have little hooks or doors where a wire is threaded. A bracket can be secured by closing the door, or by placing an elastic over the top of the wire.

Modern metal brackets are noticeably smaller than older designs. They sit closer to the tooth surface, which means less irritation to your cheeks and lips. Most patients adjust within a week or two.

Elastics

If you need bite correction, elastics are essential. They are generally strung between an upper bracket hook and a lower bracket hook. This will pull the upper jaw backward to correct an overbite, or the lower jaw back to correct an underbite.

We may use rubber bands for many different situations, especially when we want to put extra pressure on the teeth or jaws.

Glue

This is what Dr. Morra will use to attach the brackets to your teeth. It’s common to attach the bracket directly to the tooth with glue.

Orthodontic Bands

These are stainless steel rings that are cemented to your teeth using dental bonding agents.

These bands can provide an anchor for your braces and orthodontic appliances, but they are not used for everyone.

Elastic Ties/O-Rings/Ligatures/Colors

These tiny rubber rings or bands are used to attach the archwire to the brackets.

They’re less rigid than spacers and come in dozens of colors. Coloured elastics are a big hit with kids and teens. The small elastic ties that hold the archwire in place come in just about every colour you can think of. It's one of the fun parts of coming in for an adjustment appointment.

Spacers

These small elastic “donuts” or rings can be used to create space in between your teeth when needed, typically before bands are placed.

They are also referred to as separators.

What Conditions Do Metal Braces Treat?

Metal braces are one of the most versatile orthodontic options available. They work well for a wide range of issues, including:

  • Crowded teeth – when there isn't enough space in the jaw and teeth overlap or twist
  • Gapped teeth – spaces between teeth that affect appearance and bite
  • Overbite – upper front teeth overlap too far over the lower teeth
  • Underbite – lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth
  • Crossbite – upper and lower teeth don't line up side to side
  • Open bite – upper and lower front teeth don't touch when biting down
  • Misaligned midline – the centre of the upper and lower teeth don't match

If you're unsure whether your child or you need braces, a free consultation with Dr. Morra is the best first step. She'll take photos, do a full assessment, and explain exactly what she sees.

How Metal Braces Work: The Treatment Process

Step 1 – Free Consultation

Your first visit to Dream Orthodontics is always complimentary. Dr. Morra takes photos, reviews your dental and medical history, and uses 3D digital imaging to get a clear picture of what's happening with your teeth and jaw. If you're a good candidate for metal braces, she'll walk you through the treatment plan and timeline in plain language.

Step 2 – Getting Your Braces On

The bonding appointment typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes. Dr. Morra's team cleans and prepares the teeth, applies a dental adhesive, and bonds each bracket in its precise position. The archwire is then threaded through and secured. You'll leave with your braces on and a full rundown on how to care for them.

Step 3 – Regular Adjustment Appointments

You'll typically come into the office for regular check-ups. At these visits, Dr. Morra checks your progress, may swap out the archwire for a slightly firmer one as your teeth move, and replaces the elastic ties. These appointments are quick, usually 20 to 30 minutes. For tips on keeping your braces clean between visits, see our orthodontic care guide.

Step 4 – Braces Off and Retainers

When your teeth have reached their final positions, it's time to remove the braces! This appointment is something our patients genuinely look forward to. After the brackets are removed, we take impressions for your retainer. Wearing your retainer as directed is how you keep your results long-term.
