Lingual Braces vs Traditional Braces

Braces remain one of the most efficient, reliable, and cost-effective orthodontic tools. They can be used to fix crooked and misaligned teeth as well as malocclusions such as over and underbites, delivering very impressive results.

Most types of braces work in essentially the same way; they provide a constant pressure that causes the teeth to gradually move into the correct position. Your orthodontist will periodically adjust the tension of your braces to ensure that it is always ideal and the braces continue to work effectively.

The Different Types of Braces

Today we’re going to look at two different types of braces: traditional and lingual. Although they are constructed with the same materials and both provide the pressure and tension needed to address orthodontic issues, each type has its own pros and cons.

When beginning treatment, it’s important to be aware of the differences between the two options and their relative advantages and disadvantages. This ensures that you can choose the type which fits your needs and preferences best.

Traditional Braces

As their name would suggest, these are likely the images that springs to mind when you hear the word ‘braces.’ Primarily made from metal but also incorporating special elastic bands, traditional braces attach to the front of the teeth, applying tension to them directly.

Not only do they represent a cost-efficient option for those looking for treatment on a budget, but they are also highly effective at treating even complex orthodontic issues. They offer a relatively simple solution that has really stood the test of time by consistently giving excellent results.

Due to their location on the front of the teeth, however, traditional braces are highly visible. Whilst this isn’t an issue for many, the visual impact can make some people feel more self-conscious, causing them to prefer other, more discreet options. Variations such as ceramic braces can mitigate this somewhat, but lingual braces still provide a much less noticeable alternative.

Lingual Braces

Unlike traditional braces, lingual braces attach to the rear surface of the teeth. They still apply pressure and cause the teeth to shift positions in the same way, but their unique positioning in the mouth makes them much less visible.

This near-invisibility is their major advantage and the reason why many choose them over traditional braces. As the entirety of the braces are hidden behind the teeth, they remain out of sight even while talking, eating, and smiling. This can make them the perfect choice for those in need of teeth straightening or overbite correction but don’t want any impact on their appearance in the short term.

This option does come with some drawbacks, however. Lingual braces are typically more costly than traditional braces, and may not be suitable in all cases. In particular, more severe and complex cases may be better addressed using the additional tension and control offered by traditional braces. Due to their location in the mouth, lingual braces may also cause patients to talk with a lisp for a short while.

Choosing The Right Option For You

Both traditional and lingual braces can be great options, and the best way to figure out which is right for you is to speak to a fully qualified and experienced orthodontist. They’ll be able to provide you with a full examination and all the guidance you need to settle on the right solution.
